TRM and the Autonomic Nervous System
This is a somatic or body-based therapy that works with the autonomic nervous system. This type of therapy uses a variety of tools to calm down the nervous system. Individuals who have experienced trauma can have a variety of reactions such as cognitive, physiological, emotional, behavioral and spiritual.
Trauma may be the result of a perceived threat or cumulative stress such as an auto accident, sexual or physical abuse, neglect, abandonment, birth trauma, natural disasters, war, and such. Often, you may not even realize that you are in a trauma reaction. Some of these reactions might be high states of anxiety, disconnection (spacing-out), anger directed towards God, muscle tension, fatigue or overly sleepy, hypervigilance, or feeling “on guard.” If these reactions occur weeks, months or even years after the event, you may need an evaluation by a physician or mental health professional.
We, as humans, have the ability to rebound from these traumatic events. However, our rational brain often interferes with that process and we get “stuck,” which can lead to sleep disorders, anxiety disorders, panic attacks, depression and other forms of mental illness. A specially-trained therapist will teach you how to “discharge” these events by working with your Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).
If you are interested, please call me to schedule an appointment. I can teach you strategies to release these defensive responses and reset your nervous system, which can bring a sense of peace and calmness, as well as empowerment.
